Popular South Boston eatery Sullivan’s, located at Castle Island, is reportedly looking to expand to a second location. According to Wicked Local Hingham, the foodie institution which almost always can be found with a line stretching out the door, is eyeing a location at the Hingham Bathing Beach.

Wicked Local reports that “The trustees of the beach voted Tuesday night to enter into negotiations with Sullivan’s of Castle Island to take over the concession stand at the beach” and that Sullivan’s was the only company to submit a proposal.

Sullivan’s has been slinging burgers and hot dogs, for which it’s perhaps most famous, at its Southie location since 1951. According to Caught in Southie, since that time it’s been owned and operated by the same family. They, for one, are skeptical about the proposed move.

“There is something a little unsettling about Sullivan’s – which is synonymous to Castle Island and South Boston – being somewhere else – Hingham no less,” opines Caught in Southie.

Sullivan’s in Hingham could operate a space between 2,000 and 2,400 square feet, the construction of which could run the company between $800,000 and $1 million. That space would also contain a bath house. The current beachfront bath house rings in at just 800 square feet.

The Castle Island location typically runs from the last weekend in February to the last weekend in November, seven days a week except for the day of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Thanksgiving, from 8:30 a.m. to around 10 p.m.

To show appreciation for their customers, Sullivan’s offers half-priced hot dogs during the first and last weeks they’re open.
