UPDATE: “Utility pole and wires have been removed or repositioned by the utility company. Residual delays expected. If possible, customers are encouraged to consider Commuter Rail from Braintree or Quincy Center if possible. Again, we apologize to out customers for the delays and inconvenience.” – MassDOT

The Red Line train has taken the worst beating this winter resulting in crippling delays and inoperable train cars. Because of this, buses were supposed to shuttle passengers between JFK/UMass and Braintree stations but unfortunately for commuters, that, too, is experiencing delays.

According to MassDOT, a downed light pole near JFK/UMass stations is having a severe impact on traffic circulation in the area, direly affecting the shuttle buses and peoples’ morning commutes.

“The MBTA is asking customers to consider using the Commuter Rail from Braintree and Quincy Center Stations and to avoid the JFK area until the situation is resolved,” MassDOT spokesperson Mike Verseckes told BostInno. “We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.”

The combination of freezing cold weather and massive snow pileups on exposed Red Line track have made it difficult for train to grip the electrically charged third rail. This circumstance recently left three trains stranded on track for hours, unable to accelerate.

In one instance, passengers were stuck for two hours before the train was evacuated.
