A beautiful, sunny afternoon filled with barbecues and brimming beers, took a tragic 4th of July turn of events that left one person dead and three others injured. A hit-and-run took place in Bourne, MA at the base of the Sagamore Bridge on Route 6 connecting the mainland of Massachusetts to Cape Cod.

The crash occurred at roughly 8pm ET at which time a dark-colored pickup truck struck a second pickup that was subsequently sent into the opposite lane striking a minivan head on. The incident took place on the westbound side of the bridge though the suspected dark-colored pickup is thought to have left the accident in the eastbound direction. The truck is thought to have substantial front-end damage.

The names of the victims have yet to be released by the Bourne State Police, who are heading up the investigation, as is the condition of each of the three injured.

The Sagamore Bridge is notorious for its traffic build-up by those looking to escape the heat of the summer by making their way down the Cape for a summer getaway. In 2006 construction began to eliminate a rotary at the eastbound base of the Sagamore for other traffic accidents that befell with alarming frequency.

Having eked through the traffic, I’m able to personally attest to how congested the highway leaving the Cape was. At approximately 11pm ET, authorities were still continuing to divert drivers to the nearby Bourne Bridge from where they were able to resume their travels due to the fact that state troopers engaged in interviewing all witness while also employing the services of the state police collision reconstruction team in order to collect as many details as possible.

Anyone with the slightest bit of information regarding the location of the infamous dark-colored pickup truck is being urged to call the Bourne State Police Barracks at 508-759-4488. Our hearts and prayers to out to the families affected by this devastating catastrophe.
