2010 is coming to a close, and companies are prepping for their growth projections and plans in 2011. We trolled the internet looking for some of the best sounding job openings at Boston-area startups. Here’s five positions and companies at the top of our list:

Director of Customer Happiness

Well, this title just sounds awesome. Part customer service, part community management — and Wistia in the quickly growing online video space. According to the company, “We work hard everyday to make it easier for businesses to get more from their videos. That means making it easier to manage, spread, share, and learn from video.” Wistia raised $775k in March, and was a finalist in the running for the MITX Technology Award this year for rich media. Also to note: social e-commerce site Svpply is renting desks in the Wistia office.

Wistia posts about the Director of Customer Happiness opening: “We are looking for a highly motivated, eloquent, and driven person who wants to help us expand and delight our customer base. Keeping hundreds of customers happy all the time takes a little problem solving and a lot of love and care.”

Software Engineer

What sets this software engineering position apart from others? At Performable you’ll be joining an early-stage startup with an experienced team. Performable’s founding team, with a track record of success, are building an analytics product and “the future of online marketing.” Check out their team (that use hashtags like #ghettopreneur), and learn about Performable 2.0.

Performable posts on their jobs page: “Do you like cubicles and fluorescent lighting? How about motivational posters about teamwork? Would you prefer to have eight meetings before actually starting a project? Do you sometimes get a case of “the Mondays?” If you answered yes to even one of these questions, we’re going to have to ask you to leave.”

Software Engineer, Founding Team

Do you have what it takes to join a founding team? If you’re a software engineer, Locately (rebranding themselves as Cadio) should be near the top of your list. The company raised $300k in September, and an additional $100k for winning the MassChallenge competition. This mobile analytics startup is using mobile data to better understand consumer behavior (and not by active check-ins, by actual GPS data). They seem to be on to something considering they recently formed a partnership with global consumer insights leader, Nielsen.

According to the company’s posting: “We use Python, Java, Matlab, and whatever else will get the job done. A background in statistical modeling and/or processing big data (especially geographical data) is helpful, as is startup experience.”

Dumbledore of Marketing

Do you consider yourself an experienced marketer and want to lead an early-stage company at the forefront of personalized e-commerce? If you have an arsenal of marketing skills and want to apply them to an entrepreneurial setting, check out bootstrapped Blank Label, maker of personalized dress shirts. As the Dumbledore of Marketing you’ll be expected to handle SEO, SEM, analytics, PR, email and affiliate marketing efforts. Some perks: the team works remotely, and given the breadth of ownership, you definitely won’t get bored.

According to the company’s post: “[We’re] looking to bring on an experienced marketer to work with our inexperienced team. We’re only interested if you’ve run a marketing desk before and we’ll be asking you to pitch your playbook.”

Engineering Team Member

You hear and see a lot about SCVNGR’s sales rockstars, but their tight-knit engineering team is also looked to in high regard. If you’re a ruby developer, a team player and all about solving problems, they want you on the team. Some perks: Fully catered meals, your own building, and “being the fascination of the rest of the company,” which has grown a lot this year, and that you’ll have the opportunity to work in the ever-changing location-based space.

According to SCVNGR’s guru and recruiter: “Only two companies in the world use Google Place API and we have access to Facebook Place API, as well. It’s a fun, fast moving space and our engineering team because of it’s unique position in the space gets to do some eye melting awesome engineering!”
