October may be off to quite the crappy start, but let us not forget that it’s inarguably one of the best months of the year. Right in the happy center of too-hot September and too-cold November, October yields the best fall foliage, Halloween, apple picking and more. But, it’s not just the seasonal superiority that makes this month exciting – there are events going on in Boston as well that will help you get the most of October.

Boston Fashion Week

October 5-11, Multiple venues

Boston’s Fashion Week kicks off this coming Sunday, October 5, and the city’s fashion industry will celebrate the homegrown designers, collections, style icons and fashion technology on runways and during showcases all over the city. This year, the festivities will be dedicated to the late Marilyn Riseman, the Boston fashion legend who passed away earlier this year. For the schedule of fashion week events, click here.

Smoke This Rib Fest

October 5, 12 to 4 p.m., Cambridge Street

The East Cambridge Association’s Smoke This Rib Fest returns to Cambridge Street (between Fulkerson and Fifth) on Sunday, October 5. Skilled chefs will take to the pit to find out who smokes the best ribs this side of the Charles River, with restaurants like Lord Hobo, Puritan & Co., State Park and more partaking in the fun. Boston Sneaker Jam

Martha’s Vineyard Food and Wine Festival

October 16-19, Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard

Need one last reason to escape to the Vineyard before winter truly settles in? Then make it the Martha’s Vineyard Food and Wine Festival, because (if it isn’t obvious) the weekend event holds great wines, awesome seafood, and farm-fresh dishes in store for all who enter. It’s the ultimate way to treat yourself this month, so don’t hold back.

Head of the Charles

October 18-19, Charles River

Boston’s second-largest sporting event, and the biggest Regatta in the world, is back this month. Join the rowers on the river and cheer on crew teams, snack on funnel cake and bask on the footbridges near Harvard Campus that you’ve always want to walk across, but never quite get the chance to.

Wine Riot

October 24-25, Park Plaza Castle

This nationally touring wine expo returns to Boston for the second time this year, bringing its high energy and heavy pours back to Park Plaza Castle. With an Instagram station, a Bubbly Bar, a DJ and more, this wine-tasting party is far more buzzy than stuffy. Tickets are available now, and run at $60 for one four-hour session.
