“I can look at the happiness of a client as a direct result of my work, and there is no better feeling than a happy client.” – Kim Ring

What’s it like to not only work in PR – but to also own and run your own Boston PR business?

Just ask Kim Ring, owner and president of Ring Communications in Boston. Her firm offers full service public relations, social media, direct, and digital marketing solutions to clients throughout the Boston area, some of which include: The Briar Group (Gather, City Table, Ned Devine’s, Anthem Kitchen & Bar, etc), La Galleria 33, Together Festival and plenty more.

So how does a woman working in PR in the Hub spend the majority of her days? Here, Kim Ring gives BostInno a glimpse into her daily life and schedule.

How do you spend most mornings?

I’m a creature of habit. I get out of bed and head right for the gym. After my workout, I head home to have coffee, scan the day’s headlines, and cuddle with my dog, Finn. He’s an awesomely adorable spoiled brat so if I don’t pay attention to him before I start work, he acts like a jerk all day.

I do all of that before 8 a.m. so that I can be at my desk when my clients get into their offices.

What are the top priorities on your to-do list right now?

I know it’s going to sound cliché, but all of my clients are my top priority all of the time. There are 11 Briar Group restaurants to keep in the news, tons of events, including one with a panel of legendary Celtics, a number of big name acts coming to Laugh Boston, and my friends are opening a new restaurant, MAST’, within the next month or so, that I’m helping with. That’s just to name a few things going on.

What do you enjoy most about owning and running your own PR business?

The successes are mine. I can look at the happiness of a client as a direct result of my work, and there is no better feeling than a happy client.

It’s also great being my own boss. If I want to spend a lunch hour going to see The Lego Movie with my sister and nephew, I can. It is easier to balance all of the things going on in my life in my own way, and not have to abide by a structured 9 to 5 corporate regiment.

What is the worst part and the best part about your typical day?

Right now, the best and worst parts of the day are the same. A few days before this last Christmas, I lost my father to a long and hard battle with cancer. At least once a day I think of him, and what my family just went through, and I get overcome with a number of emotions: anger, sadness, panic, you name it.

But on the flip side, at least once a day I think of him and get inspired. I think of all the amazing things he did in his life, how many lives he touched and saved. Losing a parent to cancer is a mother f’er. but I think the time spent remembering my Dad will always be the best part of my day.

If you could impart one piece of advice to our readers, what would it be?

Take advantage of the life you have! Do all of the things you want to do. Don’t be afraid to fail and start over. Know that you’re stronger than you think, and capable of more than you know. And do it all with love in your heart.

What would you do if you were suddenly granted a day off from work tomorrow?

Work. It’s sad. I don’t know how to turn off. I don’t really take days off.

What’s one TV Show you can’t live without right now?

I’m obsessed with Shark Tank. I spend the entire show trying to figure out how I would market the products. Oh, and anything on Bravo. Andy Cohen is a mad genius and I love him.

If you weren’t answering my questions, what would you be doing instead?

Probably answering someone else’s.
