As a Boston resident, you may have wandered into The Curious George Store located in Harvard Square. Last year I had friends visit Boston, but instead of the usual Freedom Trail touristy jaunts, they wanted to visit the famous Cambridge store. Yes, I was a tad surprised by their enthusiasm – but thought, why not? Stepping into the store was a nostalgic experience, one that likely resonates similarly with every customer who grew up reading the iconic books.

But did you know that the store is, in fact, the world’s only brick and mortar Curious George store?

And if you’re curious about the man behind the Curious George walls, we’ve got you covered. The owner, Adam Hirsch, is just as energetic and lively as one would expect. He’s committed to making his store a destination experience, creating an interactive shop for young people. Here’s what he’s doing today (and most days).

How do you spend most mornings?

First thing as I walk through the door, I do a once around the store. We have the world’s broadest selection of Curious George items that don’t exist anywhere else in the world! Then, I review the previous day’s sales, and address any issues that may have arisen.

What are the top priorities on your to-do list right now?

Preparing the store for the holidays. Our best sellers are always our line of Curious George plush stuffed animals. We have 12 styles! Our hottest holiday toy will probably be the latest Lego items … along with Curious George stuffed animals.

What’s one TV show you can’t live without right now?

I watch very little TV. When I do, it’s sports or Boardwalk Empire or Game of Thrones. Love those two shows, and go Sox & Pats!

What is the worst part and the best part about your typical day?

Worst part is paying bills. Best part is greeting customers. Love seeing their faces as they walk through the front door. It’s awesome!

What would you do if you were suddenly granted a day off from work tomorrow?

Wow, crazy concept. Well, if it’s a weekend, I’d do something with my kids. If it’s during the work week, I’d probably go somewhere quiet and put together a list of all the things I should be doing for the business.

What kinds of people do you come across in your store on a daily basis?

We are fortunate to be situated in the heart of Harvard Square, and our customers consist of a nice balance of tourists and locals. Although our store is fairly small, we love the fact that groups can spend 20-30 minutes playing around, perusing through toys and books, and having a great experience.

If you could impart one piece of advice on our readers, what would it be?

My one suggestion, if you are opening a retail establishment, contact Swipely.  They are the credit card processor of the future. Besides that, hire great team members. We have the best in the business!

If you weren’t answering my questions, what would you be doing instead?

Reviewing new exclusive product samples. And, paying bills. Ugh!
