Back in 2012, Starbucks tested a new form of technology that would allow their patrons to charge their phones wirelessly in store. Seventeen Boston-area Starbucks were chosen to test the new in-store wireless charging devices, and now, Starbucks is planning to roll out the wireless charging technology in locations throughout the country.

The Duracell Powermat wireless charging stations come in two forms: the first is a compatible phone case paired with a mat, and users simply attach the case and place the phone on the mat. Now, they’ve also rolled out small rings implanted in tabletops and countertops at Starbucks, and once plugged into your phone’s charging port, they can juice up your device without an outlet. While several Boston Starbucks have been enjoying the benefits of the wireless charging devices – find the full list of local Starbucks with Powermats here – the new roll-out will focus primarily in San Francisco and the West Coast. According to the Powermat website, the charging devices are compatible with all Power Matters Alliance standard wireless charging devices.

The Verge reported earlier today that the new devices would reach Starbucks nationwide by 2015, and that on average, each store would host about 10 Powermats. Teavana locations across the country (Starbucks acquired the tea chain in 2012) will also be receiving the Powermat technology.

Duracell Powermat’s line includes more devices available for purchase than the rings you’ll find inside Starbucks. Currently, you can buy a Powermat phone case and power ‘banks,’ which, depending on the size, will hold different amounts of charge.

So next time you find yourself out for the day without your charge, head to Starbucks and stake claim to one of their Powermat rings. While, for now, you’ll have to seek out one of the 17 testing locations around the city, by next year, every Starbucks should be boasting the technology for you to juice up, alongside your own caffeine recharge.
