Surfacing across the internet recently has been the official trailer for All Is Lost starring my boy Robert Redford. If you watch the trailer below, you’ll likely be struck with reminiscent memories of Tom Hanks in Cast Away or Marky Mark in The Perfect Storm. But after watching the clip multiple times, I have to say that All Is Lost may be the eeriest of them all. In a good way, of course.

We find our protagonist Redford, whose character is without a name to the audience, floating solo on a desolate and sprawling body of water. After his boat unsuspectingly collides with a consequential shipping container and punctures the hull beyond repair, our hero is forced to stare mortality deep in its own eyes and use his nautical prowess to in hopes of setting foot on solid ground once more.

As mentioned above, Redford is our anonymous star of the film and as of now, there isn’t a single supporting cast member listed on movie aggregator site IMDB, alluding to an even more isolated plot line heightened by a striking lack of soundtrack save for a few tonal harmonies at the start of the trailer and some more subtle stringed instruments closer to the end.

My first instinct told me that this would probably be directed by Redford as well (fun fact: Robert Redford is considered a legendary actor but won his one and only Oscar directing Ordinary People back in 1980. #Controversial) but the movie is actually helmed and written by J.C. Chandor whose only feature film (also written and directed by hime) Margin Call earned him a nod from the Academy for Best Writing, Original Screenplay.

Sure to pass off some of his wisdom to the relative newcomer, Redford in tandem with Chandor look to have taken the ideals that made the likes of Cast Away and The Perfect Storm and given them some of the same PED’s Alex Rodriguez has so heartily pushed through his blood stream.

A stud actor plus a director with a lot to prove has the makings for movie gold. All Is Lost is due to hit theaters on October 18 so be sure to check back for more trailers and teasers.
