Sometimes, the magnetic power of a movie extends beyond a good story line. Maybe it’s the gripping soundtrack, stunning costumes (have you seen Gatsby?), or special effects that draw you in. For me, in the case of American Hustle, it’s all about the hair.

In director David O. Russell’s film that pits cons against Feds, the stars – Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Jeremy Renner, and Amy Adams – collectively sport nearly every iconic style of the 70s, sometimes to a point that renders the actors nearly unrecognizable (I’m looking at you, Bruce Wayne). Even if you don’t like the aesthetics, you’re bound to appreciate the effort it took to get the cast ready for their close-ups. And I’m not alone in my fascination with the film’s follicular magic, which was masterminded by Makeup Department Head Evelyne Noraz. The folks at New York Magazine: The Cut snagged an interview with Noraz, who details every last wave, comb-over, pin curl, and perm, and reveals that, in the case of Hustle, the guys logged many more hours in the makeup chair than their female costars. Bradley Cooper with a spray tan and Jheri curls? Bring it.

And, as it turns out, the movie itself is apparently pretty good, too. It scooped up seven Golden Globe nominations this morning, including Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.
