Assembly Row, the new development carving out retail, dining and entertainment destinations on the bank of the Mystic River in Somerville, is getting an exciting new addition. Somerville Brewing Company, the makers of Slumbrew beer, has announced they’ll be opening an outdoor taproom in the waterfront neighborhood.

American Fresh Taproom will be a beer garden and dining destination for those headed to Assembly Row. Their soft open is expected as soon as the end of this month on July 30 and 31, when guests will be invited to check out the space and enjoy beers and casual fare like sandwiches and charcuterie plates. The Somerville Brewing taproom also has a unique spin: it’s opening in the new SOMBLOX space at Assembly Row, the first retail and dining prep space to be fashioned entirely out of converted shipping containers.

The food served at American Fresh will focus on local and regional artisanal food suppliers, and according to an official release, environmentally sound choices are a priority for Somerville Brewing Company co-founder Jeff Leiter.

“We place a really high value on artisanal products so a lot of planning has gone into the selection of foods and planning the overall experience for our guests. Our food concept is based on working with artisan food suppliers, with an emphasis on local or regional products,” Leiter said in the release.

Food will be sourced from local companies like When Pigs Fly Breads, Grillo Pickles, Taza Chocolate and more, and food will be served on compostable dinnerware by Verterra. The menu will include craft beers by Somerville Brewing, like the Assembly Row Pale Ale, a 9.2 percent ABV hoppy ale, and the Porter Square Porter, brewed with Taza Chocolate cacao nibs. To eat, guests can munch on snacks like a pickle sampler or soft pretzels with a variety of mustards, or fill up on heartier options like a grilled tomato and cheese pizza or turkey and Havarti sandwich. For dessert, a version of the local favorite fluffernutter can be found, made with almond butter and fluff.

The July 30-31 soft opening will be an exclusive celebration for ticketed guests, but American Fresh Taproom plans to open to the public on August 1. Operating hours will be 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
