Cambridge based CustomMade was written up as part of a great feature in the Wall Street Journal today on the custom furniture and goods revolution. The company was mentioned along with big names like Etsy, Anthropologie (who’s founder actually lives right here in Boston), Crate & Barrel, and CB2.

When we did an in depth interview with the company in mid January, their founder and CEO Mike Salguero told us they had definitely found their niche, expecting to generate $5M in revenue in 2011 — up from $500,000 in 2010. The company plans to make a serious dent in the $15 billion market for custom made goods. This would have their revenue creeping to Boston-based custom jewelry retailer Gemvara levels — a company which just raised $15 million.

From the Wall Street Journal article:

“The website CustomMade.com is a collection of furniture makers and design studios. It screens individual designers and charges them a fee of $400 to $1,000 a year to post on the site. Shopping for a table? There’s the “artichoke table” ($2,900) from Carbondale, Colo., designer David Rasmussen, as well as “freestyle coffee table,” a glass top on a bicycle-wheel pedestal ($500 to $1,500), from designer Scott Feather of Bethlehem, Pa. Visitors to the site tripled in number to 1.5 million in 2010 compared with 2009, the website says.”

Nodding to Etsy’s non-intuitive search and interface, CustomMade plans to place a firm focus on taking more control of the content as more and more artists join the community. The company has launched browsable galleries as an initial step, along with other tools — like to search by style or specialty. They have even built an intuitive map feature where you can find custom furniture, woodwork, jewelry, and other makers not only by state — but by cities, allowing you to identify local artists around you.

Congrats to the CustomMade team on the national press!
