AOL Inc. is announcing today the launch of wow.com, a deal of the day site for Boston. The new site which offers “localized discounts on a wide range of staples and splurges, giving Boston residents access to some of the best bargains on the Web.” The tagline for Wow.com is “real deals for real people.”

This is rather amusing, I wrote a piece yesterday on location based deals and mentioned how I see AOL fitting in. Now of course this is not a mobile app, but it could be. This is a big statement for AOL, even though they are later to the market than competitors like Groupon, it reinforces the focus on hyper-local content.

“Wow.com is a win-win for consumers and local businesses,” said Bud Rosenthal, GM, AOL Paid Services. “Consumers get great savings and businesses enjoy a great way to acquire new, loyal customers on top of unparalleled brand exposure.”

Boston is one of the first three cities to roll out this offering from AOL’s paid services division, with National deals expected before the New Year. The two other cities already launched are Philly and Washington D.C.

The site has a very similar look and feel to other deal of the day sites. Check out the screen shots below:

Upcoming Deal of the Days are:

Wed., Nov 10 – Doran Consulting ($35 for $90 for single system HVAC checkup)
Thurs., Nov 11 – G’Vanni’s ($30 for $60 at restaurant)
Fri., Nov 12—Express Teeth Whitening ($59 for teeth whitening, a $149 value)

The most impressive part of this announcement for me is the domain name. Wow.com is awesome, AOL, could have come up with something with a little more wow factor than a deal of the day site.

What do you think of AOL entering this market? Do you currently use deal of the day sites? Which ones?
