Boston’s bike season is ramping up. Already the Dorchester Bike Festival took place to great local fanfare, and Bike Friday next week will help to ring in Bay State Bike Week, starting May 10. MassCommute, though, is raising the stakes by hosting the 20th annual MassCommute Bike Challenge to better convey the healthy, efficient and green message biking has to offer.

The MassCommute Bike Challenge takes place the same day as Bike Friday, May 10, and will be part of the festivities launching Bay State Bike Week. All you have to do is sign up (you can do so as an individual or as a team with coworkers) and properly register online, ride your bike a ridiculous amount, log your miles and win prizes.

MassCommute, a non-profit that advocates for increasing the use of commuting alternatives to reduce traffic congestion while improving air quality, is putting the challenge on to ignite friendly competition between Bay Staters, and more importantly to raise awareness and funds for the American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Cure and the American Cancer Society’s Bicycles Battling Cancer.

As if riding for charity weren’t enough to get you on two wheels, there will be prizes for whomever logs the most miles. Daily raffles are expected as well as team awards specific to certain categories. Team awards are based on team size and company size, amount of new ridership, longest average commute and most mileage increase over last year’s team total.

Once winners are declared and prizes are doled out, MassCommute will be throwing a Bike Bash to help celebrate a successful week of cycling. Taking place at Flat Top Johnny’s in Cambridge’s Kendall Square, attendees can expect even more raffles and prizes, snacks and beer from local staple Harpoon Brewery. The party is slated for Wednesday May 28, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

If you and your peers are interested in participating, sign up right here.
