Whether you’re depending on it to hold up your slightly loose pants or adding it to an oversized sweater to make a style statement, a belt is a must-have accessory – which also makes it a great gift for everyone on your list. But before you rush off to buy one, take note of these tips for gifting a belt that’s both functional and fashionable.

Watch the Width
An oversized belt works when cinching a dress or chunky sweater, but if you’re purchasing it for someone to wear with pants, you should keep the width to around 1.5 inches. That way, it’ll fit through the recipient’s belt loops.

Match Metals
If you’re gifting a belt to a friend who wears a watch, pay close attention. The metal tone of the watch should match up with that of the belt buckle.

Size Up
Aim to have at least an inch or two of leather left once the belt buckle has been fastened. To ensure this happens, choose a belt two to three sizes larger than your giftee’s waist measurement.  If you’re not sure of your recipient’s measurements, go for a braided belt. With no belt holes, there’s no size constrant.
