We Bostonians are a spontaneous folk. And I don’t mean that with negative connotation, mind you. I’m saying that when the mood strikes to do something out of the ordinary, something completely offhanded, we jump at the chance. Well, some of us, anyway. But thanks to Cambridge-based startup Hopper, more people can live their lives on whim if they so choose.

Hopper, the data-driven research company that aggregates and compares travel prices, is launching a new and efficient iOS app on Monday, July 28, to accommodate the 92 percent of travelers who consider themselves impromptu people.

According to research provided by Hopper, despite peoples’ willingness to be spontaneous there are very few cost-effective flight options at the last minute. That’s exactly what Hopper’s new Flight Tonight app intends to bring to the table.

I tried out the app personally and can attest to its simplistic efficiency. All one has to do is download it to their respective iOS 7 device, enter the airport most frequently used or in closest proximity and BOOM. “The app monitors airfares found for last minute round-trips departing that day,” according to Hopper, and sorts them by price, lowest first.

After all, Hopper’s data suggests that one must book a flight anywhere from 20 to 50 days in advance to get the best possible price.

Flights are also updated on a second-by-second basis, so times, prices and destinations are all subject to change.

But Hopper doesn’t want to just put you on a plane and say ‘bon voyage.’ They want to you ride in style. So, naturally, they’ve created a Flight Tonight Playlist on Spotify to calm the nerves of those nervous about getting up in the air, and provide some background music for those who like to bump and grind 30,000 feet above planet Earth.

Be sure to download the app on Monday and let us know if you make good use of it in the near future.
