The consensus is in, folks. Cupcakes are out and doughnuts (read: gourmet doughnuts) are in. The trendy treats are taking Boston by storm, accompanied with every topping and glaze imaginable (think Union Square’s bourbon and bacon, folks).

And with cupcake spots closing left and right, it seems like doughnut shops are poised to fill in that sweet void. They can even be found at your local coffee shop. Launching this week, Boston Common Coffee Co. is hosting their own Doughnut Challenge.

Now through September 3, the local coffee shop is accepting submissions via social media for customer’s own inventive doughnut idea. Boston Common hosts a special “Doughnut Thursday” every week with a different selection of “crazy and inventive” doughnuts, notes a release.

The winning doughnut will earn a spot on Boston Common’s “Doughnut Thursday” menu. The winner will also receive a $100 gift card.

And just remember – the skies the limit as far as doughnut creations go. Boston Common Coffee Co. is encouraging customers to think outside the box. In the past, Doughnut Thursday features have included combinations like Nutella Bacon, Peach Melba, Honey Buffalo Chicken, Vegan Lemonade, Salty Ketel Corn, and the Vegan Vanilla Latte.

The competition lasts until September 3 and the winning doughnut will be announced on Thursday, September 11. Enter your submission today at Facebook or Twitter.
