On Thursday night, supporters, frequenters and enthusiasts of the Boston Harbor Islands will descend upon Spectacle Island to not only celebrate the Harbor enclave’s visceral beauty and leisurely features, but also one of its greatest benefactors. The guest of honor at tonight’s event will be Boston builder Jay Gatsby Cashman.

Who’s Jay Cashman, you ask?

Let me put it to you this way: There wouldn’t be a Spectacle on Spectacle Island, let alone an engaging Spectacle Island to begin with, if it wasn’t for Jay Cashman.

Jay Cashman, Inc. was one of the heavy-construction firms charged with taking on the Big Dig. The land dug up by Cashman and company to create the Tip O’Neill tunnel which carries the Central Artery underground was recycled to reinforce the the island’s urban park.

On top of that, a Boston Harbor Island Alliance spokesperson told BostInno, Cashman has contributed significantly to the community here on land, underwriting free park access for nearly two thousand kids from Roxbury just last year.

Cashman will be in the presence of 500 fellow Harbor Islands supporters tonight and while I’m sure they’d all be delighted to have you in attendance, the event has sold out.

According to the event page, “Proceeds from the Annual Gala go to directly support Access, Awareness, and Attractions within the Boston Harbor Islands National Park.”

I recently made my way out to Peddock’s Island, one of the largest in the Harbor. As you can surely determine from the view, I highly recommend trekking out there, or to any one of the scenic spots scattered throughout, for yourself.
