UPDATED: Below is a picture of the new Fenway Park 100th Anniversary logo unveiled at the press conference minutes ago. Also announced: Release of a new site in commemoration of the Park, www.fenwaypark100.com, which we look forward to reviewing later today.

The photo of mobile discovery company WHERE’s CEO Walt Doyle speaking to his team about their $135M acquisition by eBay this morning is undoubtedly one of the most inspiring captured moments in the Hub right now. However, 99 years ago today, Fenway Park opened its doors for its first ever Baseball game. With that in mind, we wanted to share a throw back photo from the Boston Public Library of opening day at Fenway Park on April 20, 1912.

And here are some interesting facts we dug up for you to enjoy about Fenway:

  • The Sox hosted the New York Highlanders (now the Yankees) on opening day, defeating the team 7-6 in 11 innings and in front of 27,000 fans.
  • The opening never hit newspapers on April 20th due to a sinking Titanic, and instead was featured the next day on April 21st.
  • The contractor who built Fenway Park was Irish immigrant named Charles E. Logue. He broke ground on the project in 1911.
  • Fenway Park is named after the Fens area, and not the other way around.
  • The 1912 Red Sox finished 1st in the American League and defeated the New York Giants in 8 games in the 1912 World Series.
  • The Park was supposed to open on April 18th, but rain (no way – in April in Boston?) delayed the big day.
  • 6 days after opening, Massachusetts native Hugh Bradley enjoys being the first to ever hit a homerun over the Green Monster.

The MLB is live streaming the press event right now at 10:45AM, where you can learn more about all the celebrations the Red Sox, MLB and Fenway Park are planning for its 100th Anniversary 1 year from today in 2012.
