Lately, blow dry bars have been popping up everywhere. What once was only a beauty fad enjoyed mostly by a small few, has now become a blowout trend for the masses. Blowout bars are now ubiquitous in cities nationwide, including Boston. The launch of Back Bay’s Drybar, the original blowout bar, last week proves the beauty trend continues to grow.

But what if you simply don’t have the time to make an appointment, take the T and indulge in a luxurious blowout? Or what if you’re planning to hit the town but just don’t have the resources to blow $40 on a Kate Middleton-style appointment? We’re not all royalty, after all.

Fortunately, Boston Hair Stylist Jeffrey Dauksevich offered us some tips for blowout fans on how to complete a free, DIY dry bar look right in your own home. As well as how to maintain the look. Whether you decide to indulge at a blowout bar or blow dry your hair right at home, the stylist also offers tips to help you extend the look as long as possible.

There have been a proliferation of blow dry bars in the Boston area. How can I blow dry my hair like a pro?

  • Remove water from the hair when towel drying so that products will produce maximum impact.
  • Start with a prep spray from roots to ends (there are many good ones out there). This is analogous to moisturizing your skin prior to applying makeup: it will lightly moisturize and more importantly equalize the porosity of your hair to ensure products distribute through the hair evenly.
  • Apply your styling product starting with the ponytail section of your hair and finish through to the top.
  • Blow dry in sections, and wait just a few seconds before you release the brush at the ends; Let it cool and you will rule.

What are some clever ways to extend your blow dry?

  • Keep your product routine simple and clean—it’s a lot like like talking; avoid overdoing it.
  • When you’re finished styling your hair, polish off the edges of your look with a bit of pomade—crisp clean edges will keep the look solid and secure.
  • Once your look is finished, keep your hands out of it. The more you affect the fabric with your hands, the quicker you will break your look down.
  • Sleep on a silk pillow cover—keeps the static away.
  • Use powder to refresh hair day-to-day after yoga, the flight, etc.
