It certainly seems to be the case. The fall season not only means an abundance of apple cobblers and cider donuts but also an excuse to drink hard apple cider. Because let’s face it — when else do you indulge on the beverage during the year? There’s no better time to imbibe on an Angry Orchard or Harpoon’s delicious hard cider than in the midst of the perfect apple-picking season. And Boston is no exception as its residents seem to be jumping right on the hard cider bandwagon — myself included.

Despite the widespread pumpkin craze, the staple fall fruit, apples, are still holding their own this season and especially in the form of alcohol. A recent study by Restaurant Sciences, a Newton-based independent firm that tracks food and beverage product sales, reported that the market share of cider in Boston alone is higher than any regional average in America. Whoa.

Apparently, we’re big fans. But I suppose, being a beer-loving town and all, it makes sense that Boston residents live for the latest booze trends, even if that means a good old cider. From pumpkin beer to hard ciders — there’s always room for a new seasonal selection in this city.

The study, which measured the quantity sold on-premise by beer type in Q3 of 2013, found that cider’s market preference in Boston was higher at 2.6% compared to other areas of the country. The Northeast in general came in at 2.3% while the Southeast was 1.62%, the Midwest at 2.46%, the Southwest at 1.68% and the West at 1.81%.

The study revealed that lager was the leading market preference in Boston at 64.4% with ale coming in at a distant second at 32.9%. Despite the fact that Cider’s market share is currently on 2.6% in the hub, the apple drink’s share of the market has grown by 39% since 2012.

How bout them apples? This cider growth spurt is quickly becoming a fall favorite, especially in the Hub. So there’s no reason to deny yourself this up-and-coming drink of choice.
