“Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings!” – Zuzu

Yes, the holiday news is out. The Christmas classic It’s a Wonderful Life will be getting a sequel 67 years later. According to Variety, “Star Partners and Hummingbird Productions are collaborating on production” of the the sequel of the iconic 1946 film, which starred Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed.

I don’t know about you but my first thought was – how do you top the original? Well, it seems the producers are creating a sequel titled, It’s a Wonderful Life: The Rest of the Story. I, for one, thought the original ended perfectly. But apparently, the classic continues – or at least, it’s sure going to try.

The sequel will center around George Bailey’s “unlikeable” grandson, also (conveniently) named George Bailey. Similar to the original, the grandson will be shown just how terrible the “world would be if he had never been born,” according to Variety. And the film truly comes ‘full-circle’ with “Karolyn Grimes, who played George Bailey’s daughter Zuzu in the original,” filling the role of the angel. And in case you don’t remember the character, here she is (below) as Bailey’s little girl.

According to screenwriter, Bob Farnsworth, “the storyline of the new film retains the spirit of the original – every life is important as long as you have friends,” Variety reports. Grimes told the site that “the new film will retain the feeling of the original, and it simply must be shared.”

The actress claimed that she had “read close to 20 scripts over the years suggesting a sequel to It’s a Wonderful Life, but none of them were any good. The script by Bob Farnsworth and Martha Bolton was wonderful, and I wanted to be involved with his version of the film immediately,” she told Variety.

But who will play the main character and grandson, George Bailey? It’s anyone guess at the moment as the lead role hasn’t been cast yet. Although I’d love to see someone like Ryan Reynolds, Liam Hemsworth (Hunger Games meets It’s a Wonderful Life, anyone?), or perhaps even Bradley Cooper fill the shoes. We wish.

We’ll have to wait and find out next Christmas. It’s been reported that the sequel may not be released until the 2015 holiday season. In the meantime, we’ll have to settle for the classic this season and this video below.
