As you head home for the holidays, here’s some food for thought (or not). The Wall Street Journal is reporting that McDonalds has an unbelievable number (10 million pounds, to be exact) of uneaten mighty wings left over from their promotion in the fall. That’s right – 10 million pounds of frozen mighty wings are just sitting around in a freezer somewhere.

And, believe it or not, this is only 20 percent of the 50 million pounds of chicken wings that were ordered by McDonalds back in the fall. Yes, according to the WSJ, the “approximately 20 percent of that inventory remains, because the chain was unable to sell enough… Now the company is planning to offer another promotion in order to sell the wings, which are in frozen storage.”

For those who don’t remember these mystery mighty wings, the chicken was criticized back in the fall “for being too expensive and spicy” and were sold for more than $1 per piece. And for a fast-food chain like McDonalds, we can all agree that’s a tad pricey.

For now, it looks as though McDonald franchisees will be forced to re-promote Mighty Wings to try and sell the rest of the chicken inventory.

And speaking of franchisees, it looks like Central Square in Cambridge is now home to the only McDonalds in the Greater Boston area to have a walk-up window. According to Boston Restaurant Talk, the walk-up windows are popular in New York and Chicago, and now Boston finally has it’s own. But we’ll have to wait and see how many of us actually use it to order those left over Mighty Wings.
