Raise your hand if you miss spending time outdoors in the warm sun. Sigh. With this season’s first winter storm behind us, we’re already counting down the days until summertime is here again – hang in there, folks. But until that day arrives, we have some good news that will light up your winter and hopefully make summer worth the wait.

Universal Hub is reporting that Harbor Arts is “working on a new project to light up Boston Harbor.” Yes, you heard right – an “80’ x 50’ flexible mesh video sail” may soon be “installed between the two masts of the old Nantucket Lightship, which has been moored at an East Boston pier for years.”

According to Brian Kane who is working with Harbor Arts, this Lightship will be a “monumental interactive sculpture for Boston Harbor.” The mesh video sail will actually be an “animated floating mirage” that can be seen from the shore. It will blow in the wind just like a normal sail – and reflect it’s colorful video in the harbor’s water.

The best part about this interactive Lightship is the fact that it will indeed be interactive. According to Brian Kane:

“The public will be able to upload moderated videos from their mobile devices and have them displayed on the sail, which is daylight visible and can be seen from downtown Boston and across the waterfront areas.”

So it looks as though Boston residents will actually be able to choose what is on display. We’ll have to wait for more details on when the Lightship will be ready for the public. But one thing’s for sure, we all have something to look forward to after this winter.
