Word on the street (and in the papers) is that Jenji Kohan, creator of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black and Showtime’s Weeds, is developing a new drama for HBO. And, according to The Hollywood Reporter, it happens to be focused on our next door neighbor: Salem, Massachusetts.

The Orange is the New Black creator will write the untitled Salem drama through her overall deal with Lionsgate TV. The period drama will explore “the circumstances surrounding one of the most compelling chapters in American history, when intolerance and repression set neighbor against neighbor and led a town to mass hysteria,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sounds intense.

I don’t know about you but I’ve always found the Salem Witchtrials to be incredibly fascinating. And considering how brilliantly written Kohan’s other two TV hits were, I’m confident that she’ll do the period drama justice – with of course, a lot of drama.

And considering that her other TV shows are set in the present, it looks as though this 17th century setting will surely be new territory for Kohan. Especially since her modern TV shows thus far (i.e. Orange is the New Black and Weeds) have been heavily influenced by pop culture.

And according to The A.V. Club, “Kohan will write the script with Bruce Miller (Alphas, Eureka) and Tracy Miller, and produce through Kohan’s overall deal with Lionsgate TV.” But to all of the Orange is the New Black fans – no fear. The second season is “currently in production,” and apparently since Netflix and HBO “don’t operate on traditional broadcast shooting schedules, the shows wouldn’t necessarily conflict,” The A.V. Club reports.

We’ll have to wait for more details on the production (and of course for an official title), but in the mean time, we hope the town of Salem, Mass. is preparing themselves to quickly become the center of attention.
