Who doesn’t remember the good old days when the most embarrassing way to pop the question (read: over the top) was on the oh-so-mortifying Jumbotron? Not romantic. Those were bad enough – but as you’ve seen on Youtube lately, it’s only getting worse, ladies. What happened to the simple question – “Will you marry me?” – without the bells and whistles?

From Bruno Mars flash-mob proposals to the first live lip-dub proposal of Bruno Mars’ song, “Marry You,” in Portland – complete with dancers and a marching band, it seems that getting married is only becoming a race to win the “best marriage proposal ever!” And what exactly about these Bruno Mars “Marry You” lyrics (below) are so romantic, anyway?

It’s a beautiful night,

We’re looking for something dumb to do.

Hey baby,

I think I wanna marry you.

First of all, marriage is being described as just “something dumb to do” (WHAT?). And second, you think you want to marry me? I’ll pass, thanks.

Fortunately, How About We has released the results from a survey that confirmed what we knew all along: most women just want a NORMAL proposal. The survey asked 7,000 Brits how they would like to be proposed to in this day-and-age. Over half (51 percent) of women say that “they’d prefer their boyfriends to propose by simply asking, ‘Will you marry me?’” Now, that wasn’t so hard.

Only 11 percent of the women surveyed prefered to have an “extravagant” proposal (i.e. Bruno Mars-style). Which should come as refreshing news to those out there who feel they need to hire an entire video crew, actors and a high school marching band, just to propose to their loved one. Phew.

And while creative proposals are indeed entertaining (before they became a dime-a-dozen), it’s the fact that they’re turning into a “spectator sport” of sorts that really bothers me.

After all, as Valerie Alexander of the Huffington Post put it so brilliantly, shouldn’t we choose to marry the person “who will take care of the laundry and change the baby’s diapers when you’ve got the flu, rather than the one who spent a month choreographing his proposal so that the video of it would go viral?” In other words, Bruno Mars lyrics just don’t cut it.
