Don’t get me wrong, there are certainly a plethora of great holiday classics from the 90’s. And so far, it seems the 21st century has barely been able to keep up with the likes of Home Alone, Miracle on 34th Street remake, or You’ve Got Mail – all Christmas classics in their own right.

But there’s no denying that a few terribly cheesy holiday movies snuck in the otherwise long list of classic 90’s holiday films. And two of these that come mind are I’ll Be Home for Christmas and (gasp) Jingle All the Way. But which of these was the worst Christmas movie from the 90’s? Let’s find out which one tanked the most in This vs. That.

Cast

There’s no denying that the cast in both of these holiday flops is fairly recognizable. And the stronger the cast, the better the holiday movie – in my opinion. Both 90’s films feature a few famous actors – all of which are actually pretty good at acting. After all, who could forget Jonathan Taylor Thomas, 90’s poster child (literally, I had a JTT poster), or the former Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger? Not any trueblood 90’s child.

The cast of Jingle All the Way included not only Schwarzenegger but also Sinbad and Rita Wilson. Pretty solid. And in addition to Jonathan Taylor Thomas, I’ll Be Home for Christmas starred Jessica Biel – who later became famous in her own right and (of course) married Justin Timberlake. But regardless, it seems to me that Jingle All the Way has the better cast.

Worst: I’ll Be Home for Christmas

Memorable and overall enjoyment

This is obviously opinion – but if I had to choose which of these holiday movies I’d watch right now, it would definitely be I’ll Be Home for Christmas. Why? Because this movie is truly the epitome of the 90’s – with teeny-bopper idol, JTT, and Jessica Biel’s 90’s-style flipped hair – how could you not enjoy this movie? Especially compared to such cringeworthy scenes that included the likes of Sinbad and Schwarzenegger.

Worst: Jingle All the Way

Box Office Status

So how did both of these films hold up at the box office? Well, according to IMDB, I’ll Be Home for Christmas was released in November 1998 and earned a gross total of $12,213,678 by 1999.

Jingle All the Way was released in 1996 and earned a gross total of $60,573,641 by 1997. While the film did have a larger budget than I’ll Be Home for Christmas, it paid off by earning more overall popularity among movie goers.

Worst: I’ll Be Home for Christmas

Winner (or loser?)

And the worst holiday movie of the 90’s goes to… I’ll Be Home for Christmas. As much as we loved the 90’s, this movie is clearly 1.5 hours of nothing but cheese.
