The 2013 Boston Marathon is closing in as we make our way through April, and for most of us, that guarantees an excuse to take the day off of work or class, and drink in public. Or, perhaps it guarantees you an excuse to complain endlessly about still having to go to work on the sacred holiday that is Marathon Monday Patriots’ Day. But for upwards of 20,000 brave souls, April 15th signifies the pinnacle of months of physical (and mental) training, the culmination of hard work, and the ultimate 26.2-mile challenge. Basically, anyone who runs the marathon has earned my respect, and a place in epic Boston Marathon history.

Still, amongst the pavement-pounding footsteps of every runner who’s made his or  her way from Hopkinton into downtown Boston, and crossed that Copley Place finish line, some moments stand out beyond the rest. Record breakers, trail blazers, and inspirational stories abound throughout the 117 years of marathon history. And this year, the marathon has yet to be run, but memorable moments have already been made.

Let’s call these moments extra-epic. Actually, let’s not. But you get the idea.

If you’re not participating in the 2013 Boston Marathon this year, you can still get in on the action and hopefully witness the making of history. The race starts in Hopkinton, Mass. in several waves: Wave One starts at 10 a.m., Wave Two starts at 10:20 a.m., and Wave Three starts at 10:40 a.m, with the Wheelchair Division and Elite Women and Men heading out earlier.
