Thursday morning Mayor Marty Walsh will attempt to show off his social media chops by hosting a 9:00 a.m. Twitter chat. Those looking to follow along or shoot him questions are invited to use the hashtag #AskMJW. This is the first time Boston’s newly anointed Mayor will directly address the tech and innovation crowd in the easily digestible “Ask Me Anything” format popularized by sites like Reddit.

By taking to Twitter’s network, the man who’s terrible with technology, by his own admission, is hoping to convey his administration’s theme of transparency while bolstering his persona as a man of the people. He’s already made countless public appearances and thrown a collection of community service events in inner-city neighborhoods like his native Dorchester, Roxbury, Roslindale and Mattapan.

In connecting with Bostonians who are regularly wired-in, whether for work or leisure alike, he’s able to uphold a timeless Boston mayoral tradition in having the uncanny ability to bridge the gaps between the city’s innumerable demographics and neighborhoods; think Mayors Tom Menino, Kevin White and even as far back as James Michael Curley and John F. Fitzgerald.

How well Mayor Walsh will fare in a world limited to 140-characters remains unclear. But his willingness to better cohere to those with which he hasn’t been traditionally intertwined with is a smart move on his part. And really, it’s part of his M.O. — an exemplification of the trajectory his life has taken, from the streets of Dorchester battling cancer and alcohol, to the gilded political realm of Beacon Hill, to the hallowed City Hall to using high-tech methods of relating to the people he serves in an effective and efficient manner.
