For the first time in 20 years, Boston residents are voting in a preliminary mayoral election. Today, eligible voters will determine who the top two candidates contending to replace incumbent Mayor Tom Menino will be.

Currently, there are 12 candidates: Felix Arroyo; John Barros; Charles Clemons; Dan Conley; John Connolly; Rob Consalvo; Charlotte Golar Richie; Mike Ross; Bill Walczak; Marty Walsh; David Wyatt; and Charles Yancey.

Here is how their names will appear on the ballot.

Boston voters will narrow that list of 12 down to two for the Nov. 5 election. Voters will also be asked to select up to four candidates for city councilor at large and one city councilor for their district.

Here is a sample ball0t; and a rundown of each candidate.

If you don’t think you will be able to get to your local polling station today, plan ahead for the Nov. 5 election and consider casting an absentee ballot — just know the rules before you determine whether that’s an option.

If transportation is a concern, check your candidate’s website; they may be offering rides upon request.

Of the 12 candidates for voters to choose from, John Connolly has consistently remained at the top of the polls. Marty Walsh, Charlotte Golar Richie, and Dan Conley have struggled to create separation from each other or emerge as Connolly’s top competitor.

Mike Ross, Rob Consalvo, Felix Arroyo, Bill Walczak and John Barros fill the next tier of candidates.

With few percentage points separating the top eight candidates, today’s preliminary remains wide open.
