Less than two weeks after Boston launched its parking space saver-removal operation, North End residents showed overwhelming support to ban the winter practice for good.

North End Waterfront reports the North End/Waterfront Residents’ Association (NEWRA) voted 25-7 Thursday night to join a coalition of other neighborhood groups expected to sign a resolution that would ban space savers across multiple downtown neighborhoods. The ban is already in place in the South End.

Spearheading this most recent fight against space savers is Steve Wintermeier, the North End Waterfront reports. Wintermeier is a member of everyone’s favorite Neighborhood Association of Back Bay (NABB), as well as a member of the Alliance of Downtown Civic Organizations (ADCO).

Neighborhoods involved in the push to bring space-saving practices to an end include: the North End, the South End, Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Fenway, the West End, and downtown Boston.

Wintermeier’s charge, the North End Waterfront reports, is in response to the, quote, “uncivil behavior” this winter, brought about by City Hall’s relaxed stance on space savers.

Due to unprecedented amounts of snow – snow that’s expected to cost the city $50 million to removeMayor Marty Walsh initially OK’d the practice. However, at the end of February, Walsh announced that the Public Works Department would start collecting space savers March 1.
