City officials say Boston will spend $87 million over six years to cover costs of a pay raise for the police patrolmen, approved today by the city council.

By a 12-0 vote, Boston’s City Council unanimously approved the raise, Boston.com reports. Councilor at Large and former mayoral candidate John Connolly, who voiced repeatedly his disapproval of the award during his campaign, wasn’t in attendance for the vote.

Mayor-elect Marty Walsh did not weigh in on the council’s vote.

Mayor Tom Menino had said the arbitrator’s award – which came after the union representing the City’s patrolmen couldn’t agree to terms with local officials – was too expensive for Boston.

The Boston.com report states that city officials estimate the raise, which includes “pay and perks,” is good for a 25.4 percent boost in total compensation.
