A Boston police officer who allegedly assaulted an Uber driver in January has been suspended without pay, the BPD announced Thursday.

Veteran BPD officer Michael Doherty, 40, was indicted on multiple charges, stemming from a bizzare incident that reportedly occurred in the early morning hours of January 4. Doherty, after disputing his South Boston drop-off location, allegedly began verbally and physically attacking an unidentified Uber driver, who purportedly managed to escape thanks to the actions of a good samaritan driving by the scene,

“These allegations are very troubling and certainly don’t reflect the attitudes of the hard working, compassionate men and women of the Boston Police Department,” said BPD commissioner Bill Evans. “This should send a strong message that this type of behavior will not be tolerated or ignored. I hold my officers to the highest of standards, and will take swift serious action if any should choose to conduct themselves inappropriately.”

Doherty, who was placed on administrative leave immediately following his arrest, appeared in court dawning a black eye and a sling over his left arm January 5.

Doherty was indicted on multiple charges, including two counts of assault and battery, assault and battery for purpose of intimidation, violation of constitutional rights, and unauthorized use a motor vehicle. He’s expected to appear in Suffolk Superior Court at a later unknown date.
