The Massachusetts House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly in favor of creating license plates in commemoration of the tragic Boston Marathon bombings. The plates, which would bare the city’s adopted mantra ‘Boston Strong,’ would cost those looking to support the cause $50 on top of the usual registration fee for private passenger motor vehicles. The bill now moves over to the Senate before making its way across Governor Deval Patrick’s Beacon Hill desk.

The measure passed the House by a unanimous margin 150 for and zero against. Before the Senate puts it to a vote, however, it goes before the Senate Ways and Means which will likely determine how much of the proceeds “shall be directed to the One Fund Boston,” as per the legislation. The registration fee for private passenger motor vehicles is $50 according to the Registry of Motor Vehicles, rendering the total cost for a memorial plate a cool $100.

The language of the measure makes no reference to how the plates might look. It simply reads “distinctive registration plates which shall display on their face a design indicating support for the people most affected by the tragic events that occurred in Boston on April 15, 2013 and the words ‘Boston Strong.'”

It’s not farfetched to consider that the plates might boast the yellow and blue Boston Strong ribbon that many have used as a sticker in shows of support, though there’s no way of determining that at this time.

According to the Senate Ways and Means Committee, no hearing date has been assigned to the bill yet.
