When a “cheap date” in Boston still happens to be one of the most expensive dates in the world, you know you live in a pretty pricey city. Well, folks – I’m sorry to say but we live in one such city.

Dates don’t come cheap in this town. Even if you plan a “free” picnic on the Esplanade, someone still has to foot the bill for transportation, food and booze. And while that may seem affordable enough, it’s not – relative to the cheap date index, anyway.

According to FWx, Deutsche Bank recently released its annual cheap date index and unfortunately for all of the penny pinchers out there, Boston made the list. The cheap date index was based off of the cost of a cab ride, two movie tickets, two McDonald’s hamburgers and two beers. Cities were then ranked based on these prices.

Notably, “no American city cracked the top 10” but Boston did rank as the 14th most expensive city to go out on a date. New York came in at number 11 followed by Toronto and San Francisco. Chicago was the 15th most expensive city to go on a date.

The takeaway here? If you’re going on dates in Boston (and not at McDonald’s), you better have a job. If not, we recommend sticking to dinner and a movie at home. Just remember it could be a lot worse – you could be dating in London.
