Boston’s got jokes! And if you don’t believe me, just ask The University of Colorado’s Humor Research Lab. According to their study, Boston is officially the second “funniest” city in America (enter laugh track).

The A.V. Club reported that the study was based off “surveys of residents on the importance of humor in their daily lives, comedy clubs per square mile, native-born comedians per capita, numbers of comedy websites and Twitter feeds, and something involving a whoopee cushion.” Are whoopee cushions still funny? (the answer is yes).

While Chicago came in first, Boston was a close second. I can’t deny that our city certainly has a hopping comedy scene, with everything from improv to comedy clubs. Whether you’re in the North End to see an Improv Asylum show or in the Seaport to chuckle at Laugh Boston’s stand-up, there’s plenty of hilarity to be found in this town.

Or at least – we think so.

And as a transplant (someone not from Boston) I can attest that this city does indeed have jokes. I’ve noticed that the “dry high brow and rowdy low-brow humor” is second nature to native Bostonians. If you’re not “one-upping” someone, you’re being “one-upped” yourself – so watch your back.

Even if other Americans don’t “get” our rowdy sense of humor, at least Boston’s funny factor has been confirmed by this study. Just beware of flying zingers as you walk the streets – our Hub is full of them.
