No doubt – we’ve lost a lot of great restaurants this year, Boston. From an iconic roast chicken dish to turkey hash sandwiches, the vanished fare still haunts us to this day. And with Halloween just around the corner, we think it’s only right to revisit a few of the Hub’s most dearly departed eateries in the dining scene, some of which may even be rising from the grave sometime soon (cue: The Walking Dead). But in the meantime, take a look at this year’s Boston restaurant graveyard of 2014.

RIP

Goody Glover’s (Closing October 2014)

Sad but true – the beloved North End pub announced that it is closing at the end of this month. And there are rumors that a Peet’s Coffee could be moving into the space. Goody Glover’s is located at the base of Salem St.

Hamersley’s Bistro (Closed October 2014)

After 27 years, the iconic South End restaurant served its final meal last night, October 27. The restaurant, owned by Chef Gordon Hamersley and wife Fiona Hamersley, was known for its staple roast chicken dish, which also happened to be one of Julia Child’s favorites. As for the restaurant space, it looks as though the folks behind The Gallows will be bringing a new concept to the shuttered Hamersley’s Bistro space, located at 553 Tremont St.

Smoken’ Joe’s BBQ and Blues (Closed September 2014)

The Brighton BBQ spot shut down temporarily last year due to construction, and unfortunately shuttered for good this fall. The owners were forced to close after issues with the landlord, health problems and money issues. Smoken’ Joes was located at 351 Washington St. in Brighton.

Blue Inc. (Closed September 2014)

Popular downtown restaurant, Blue Inc., closed suddenly this past September. And according to reports, chef and owner Jason Santos will not be reopening the restaurant. Instead, a new restaurant concept dubbed Broad Street Riot could be moving into the space, according to Universal Hub. Blue Inc. was located at 131 Broad St. in downtown Boston.

Tommy Doyle’s (Closed September 2014)

The popular Irish Pub was open for more than decade in Cambridge’s Kendall Square neighborhood. But alas, it closed suddenly this past September, according to Eater Boston. The article also notes that the former employees left a sign outside the restaurant telling to patrons to “blame the owner.” Tommy Doyle’s was located at 1 Kendall Square in Cambridge.

Cactus Club, Boston (Closed August 2014)

Back Bay’s popular Mexican restaurant, Cactus Club, closed this August due to problems with their rent, according to Boston Restaurant Talk. But the Boston Globe also reported back in August that the owner is looking for a new space, which means there may be hope for Cactus Club fans, like our own Liz Gottbrecht. The Cactus Club was located at 939 Boylston Street.

Kickass Cupcakes (Closed August 2014)

You know the cupcake trend is truly dead when Somerville’s popular Kickass Cupcake closes its doors. This past August, the cupcake shop did exactly that, closing without warning or explanation to customers. Yes, it’s the great cupcake mystery of 2014. The shop was located at 199C Highland Ave. in Somerville.

M3, Somerville (Closed August 2014)

The meat-and-three Southern-style restaurant in Davis Square was forced to close its doors this past August. According to Boston Restaurant Talk, the restaurant was seized by the state for not paying its rent (apparently owing over 25k to the landlord). M3 was located at 382 Highland Ave. in Somerville.

Bagel Rising (Closed July 2014)

This past July, beloved bagel shop, Bagel Rising, closed for good. And, much to the dismay of Allston locals, reopened as a Pavement Coffeehouse under the same ownership, reported Eater Boston. Bagel Rising was located at 1243 Commonwealth Ave. in Allston.

Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe (Closed June 2014)

The closing of Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe caught many of its turkey hash fans off guard this past summer. We were not too pleased when the iconic sandwich shop closed its doors after 87 delicious years in business. But thankfully, it looks as though the restaurant may be coming back to life under new ownership. According to the Boston Globe, “Chef Evan Deluty, who runs Stella in the South End … hopes to reopen it in early 2015.” Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe was located at 429 Columbus Ave. in the South End.

Rendezvous (Closed June 2014)

Beloved Central Square restaurant, Rendezvous, closed earlier this summer after nine years under the helm of chef and owner Steve Johnson. The Boston restaurateur sold the Cambridge space to Green Street alums, Greg Reeves and Mark Young, who have now transformed the restaurant into Viale, a Mediterranean-inspired eatery. Rendezvous was located at 502 Massachusetts Ave. in Cambridge.

Centre Street Cafe (Closed June 2014)

This Jamaica Plain brunch spot, Centre Street Cafe, closed its doors this year but thankfully, they won’t stay closed for long. According to Universal Hub, the restaurant has been sold to the owner of Tres Gatos who will be changing the restaurant’s menu but keeping the Centre Street Cafe name. The revamped version of the restaurant is supposed to open sometime this fall. Centre Street Cafe was located at 669a Centre Street in Jamaica Plain.

Audubon Circle (Closed March 2014)

Popular Fenway restaurant, Audubon Circle, closed earlier this year but reopened under new ownership in just one month. The new restaurant, dubbed Audubon, was opened by the same folks behind Trina’s Starlite Lounge (Beau Sturm, J Bellao, Josh Childs and Chef Suzi Maitland). Audubon Circle was located at 838 Beacon Street.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story mis-stated the kind of cuisine served at Centre St. Cafe. It was known for its brunch menu.
