The real-time online reservation network OpenTable announced on Monday that it will expand its mobile payments service to other U.S. cities – including Boston – this year after a successful pilot program in San Francisco.

According to the announcement, OpenTable’s mobile payment program is launching in New York City this week “with more than 45 restaurants and will be introduced in 20 additional cities by the end of the year.” This will include Boston, according to an official source at OpenTable. Diners in the Hub can expect to see OpenTable’s mobile payment program available for Boston restaurants sometime in late 2014.

According to a release, all Boston diners will have to do is download the latest version of the OpenTable iPhone app. If diners book through OpenTable, they can add their credit card information, which will “enable them to view and pay their check at participating restaurants with a few taps,” notes the release.

What differentiates OpenTable’s mobile payment program from others is the fact that there is no scanning or barcodes involved, and no new equipment needed for existing OpenTable restaurant customers.

All diners need to participate is the OpenTable app. Diners who pay their check via the company’s tech can also leave whenever they’re ready; there’s no need to wait around for a restaurant representative to confirm the payment.
