UPDATE:

It’s no secret that Boston is a maritime city built on the likes of merchant trading, whaling, and of course fishing. But, the occurrences taking place on the corner of A Street and Congress Street in Southie’s Fort Point area gives another meaning to Boston’s aquatic characteristics.

On Vimeo, user Pete K uploaded a video of a broken water main and a steady stream of H2O bursting through the concrete at the aforementioned corner, just across the Congress Street bridge in the slightly more affordable Seaport District, aka the Innovation District.

Check out the video right here:

It’s unclear at this point what caused the massive surge but the description of the video hints at its power. The break sent “water, dirt, and rocks up several stories and down onto the sides of buildings, car windshields, and huge puddles.”

Ouch.

Boston Water and Sewer Commission spokeswoman Jean Richardson told the Boston Herald, “It was a fire protection pipe in a private alley serving one building.”

Nearby construction may have had a part to play but nothing has been solidly determined at this point. The pipe has since been shut down.
