Mayor Marty Walsh announced the past 30 days have been the snowiest on record in the history of Boston, and urged residents to stay off the roads through Tuesday to allow city crews to perform an unprecedented snow removal effort.

Speaking at 3 p.m. press conference, Mayor Walsh told reporters that no city administration has ever dealt with the amount of snow Boston has received in such a short period of time. With Winter Storm Marcus likely to drop a total of two feet of snow on the city by 1 a.m. Tuesday morning, the mayor is erring on the side of caution.

Boston Public Schools will remain closed Tuesday, Mayor Walsh said. Additionally, all city-hosted events and meetings scheduled for Monday night and Tuesday have been cancelled.

Mayor Walsh said the city’s focus on Tuesday will shift from plowing streets to snow removal.

The heavy amount of snow has already forced the city to spend nearly double its original snow removal budget. In the last 24 hours alone, the mayor said, the city has melted 6,000 truckloads of snow.

The mayor called for businesses to allow employees to work from home Tuesday, and asked Bostonians to remain patient while snow removal efforts continue.

The hope is for city operations to return to normal by Thursday, Mayor Walsh said. But another storm could be brewing for the end of the week.
