Tragedies like today’s marathon bombing highlight the worst humanity has to offer. But the force and immediacy of citizens’ response to such a tragedy can showcase the absolute best.

In that vein, members of the Boston tech community are rallying peers to donate to victims of today’s bombing, via the charity Tech Underwriting Greater Good (TUGG).

TUGG has launched a campaign on Fundraise.com to funnel donations from the tech community to relevant causes. According to the campaign page:

All proceeds will be donated completely to programs working with victims of the attacks including Red Cross, Children’s Hospital, and others.

The choice to partner with third party organizations was driven by a desire to have as much impact as possible, as quickly as possible. TUGG holds multiple charity and volunteering events annually, through which the Boston tech community supports youth-oriented charitable causes, usually via an “open source” voting model during events. TUGG was founded by local venture capitalists in 2009.

Phil Beauregard, CEO of Objective Logistics, helped organize the campaign and shared the story of how it came together over email:

Started as a blood drive solicitation that went viral…almost all of boston startup scene responded. American Red Cross couldn’t handle the volume within the next few days, so we decided to garner the support into a fundraise instead. Pinged David Brown and Jeff [of TUGG] and they were awesome…got it going right away. Such a cool outpouring… The money is going to go to the support & care of the families and victims, and then the overage to the Red Cross on behalf of Boston Startups.
