Update: The Starbucks evenings menu lists that it will be available in the Seattle, LA, Chicago, Atlanta and Portland area. Sigh. Let’s hope they make plans to roll out the menus in Boston at some point.

Caffeine can only get us so far through the work week. Once the clock hits 5 p.m., we’re usually in need of something stronger, like, say, a nice glass of wine.

Starbucks feels that, and so they’ve been working on getting the good stuff into select stores in the coming years. That’s right: Your favorite barista could soon become your favorite bartender after hours, as Starbucks plans to start selling alcohol in the evenings, post 4 p.m.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Starbucks’ COO Troy Alstead said that the company had been testing new alcohol and light bites menus (ahem, small plates) in various markets, and that the idea was working (ahem, making them lots of money). The rollout will take a few years, and while the menus won’t be available at all Starbucks locations, it will hit urban areas hardest.

Does this mean your local Boston Starbs will eventually be serving up a glass of Malbec alongside bacon-wrapped dates? Perhaps. No word on exactly where the menus will be available yet, but if Boston’s notoriously tight liquor laws don’t ruin everything and we do see it in our market, Starbucks may start to give Dunkin’ Donuts a run for its money in local allegiance. Because while we do love our iced coffees, we also love to booze.

Who knows, though: apparently Boston’s love for Dunkin’ has approached “bizarre and violent” territories. Oops. Maybe a stiff one at the neighborhood Starbucks would help calm us all down?
