Earlier this morning Mike Troiano announced that he was leaving the agency life at Holland-Mark for greener pastures. After some digging around we were able to locate those greener pastures. As of Monday, Troiano will be the CMO of Waltham based Actifio. And if you haven’t yet heard of Actifio – widely considered one of Boston’s best kept secrets –  that’s because they’ve never had a CMO, never mind someone as talented as Troiano.

Troiano’s departure from Holland-Mark will mean that Boston startups will have to find another person to help them craft their brand, however, we will finally get see what Troiano is really made of. Troiano has helped this company (Streetwise Media) and many other startups in Boston – Zipcar, Gazelle, Hello Health, Linkable Networks, Springpad, Intronis, BuyWithMe, VSnap, Notch Brewing, Actifio, Plexxi, Adelphic Mobile, Blank Label, CoachUp, Kibits, Quant5, Weathermob, Of Course, Gemvara, and even the New England Venture Capital Association itself – craft their brand as an advisor/mentor, but what can this man do at the helm of an IPO bound company? Time will tell, but I’d put some big money on Actifio becoming a household name in the coming months.

Actifio was founded in 2009 and has about 150 employees. The company recently raised a whopping $33.5 million in Series C funding that was led by west coast giant Andreessen Horowitz. That is in addition to the $24 million that it has already raised from big names like North Bridge Venture Partners, Advanced Technology Ventures, and Greylock Partners.

The company has been quietly building an enormous business out in Waltham and realized that it’s time to make some noise. Sure their business isn’t super sexy, but if they want to become a pillar company here in Boston, they’d better perfect their story for all to understand.  In short, Actifio is aiming to change the way that data is currently stored and managed by creating what they call, ‘Protection and Availability Storage (PAS).‘ Basically, they let businesses store and recover data for a fraction of the time and costs offered by products today.

This town needs another massive company in order to breed and cultivate talent. Let’s hope that Actifio can make that happen.
