Editor’s Note: Brass Monkey inventor and CTO Chris Allen has contributed a guest article as part of BostInnovation’s featured series this week focused on HTML5. The piece speaks more in depth to the why behind this acquisition: “HTML5, WebGL & The Impending Web Based Gaming Revoluion.”

In a purely equity based deal, Boston based Brass Monkey has formally announced the acquisition of San Francisco based Emotely. Both companies have built similar breakthrough technologies that turn your smartphone into a game controller, and plan to make some serious waves as a solution under one name.

For those of you new to our coverage of Brass Monkey, its technology enables you to interact and control games and other digital content right from your phone (and regardless if those games or otherwise are on a PC, your TV or on a big billboard in Times Square). Brass Monkey built its technology with a focus on compatibility with Unity, Flash and C++. Emotely, on the other hand, has focused on compatibility with HTML5 games and apps. This makes the integration of the two companies natural, offering a more powerful solution and software developer kit (SDK) together under one name.

Brass Monkey inventor and CTO Chris Allen told BostInno yesterday that HTML5 compatibility was already on their product roadmap, but it made most sense to acquire Emotely as opposed to building the technology in-house from the ground up.

Emotely’s founder, Francois Laberge, will take on the title and role of Chief Innovation Officer at Brass Monkey. And while Allen tells us the Emotely team will remain in San Francisco and operate autonomously, he believes this new dual-coast presence will help Brass Monkey tremendously as developers and brands begin building more interactive games and other content using their SDK. Later this year, for example, the company will offer an online portal for Brass Monkey enabled games and execute on a deal with a serious online gaming platform (more to come soon on that!).

Feel like the Emotely company name rings a bell? If you followed the TechCrunch Disrupt conference last week, it should. The company was selected and called on stage for mock “office hours” with Michael Arrington (TechCrunch) and Paul Graham (Y Combinator). Unfortunately Emotely wasn’t able to actually make it to TC Disrupt (perhaps that had something to do with the acquisition), and no one from the company hopped on stage. Nonetheless, it made for a great headline on their blog titled, “Michael Arrington of Techcrunch: ‘Emotely was kinda cool!'”

Here is a video demoing Emotely’s technology:

Congrats to the Brass Monkey team on the acquisition and integration!
