Last fall, we were forced to say goodbye to the beloved North End pub, Goody Glover’s. Now, it looks as though the pub’s next door neighbor, Bread + Butter Cafe, has closed its doors as well. That’s according to NorthEndWaterfront.com via Adam Castiglioni, who shared a sign on the cafe’s window, indicating that the restaurant would still offer its caterings services.

The NorthEndWaterfront.com article notes that the restaurant’s furniture and equipment were moved out of the now-shuttered space in late December. The cafe, which opened in May 2013, had been in operation for only 20 months.

As a former North End resident, I can attest that Bread + Butter was a good alternative to the neighborhood’s other coffee shop options and Italian fare. And the cafe’s ideal location, overlooking the Greenway, certainly wasn’t lacking in views or patio seating either. But according to NorthEndWaterfront.com, “businesses have had a tough time in the location that occupies a stretch of what is mostly 1 and 2 story buildings on Cross Street between Hanover and Endicott Streets.”

This past November, New York-based Charter Realty & Development Corp. purchased land and buildings “near the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway for $10.5 million,” according to the Boston Business Journal. Bread + Butter’s location was part of the purchase. Paul Brandes of Charter Realty & Development told the Boston Business Journal:

“We clearly see an amazing opportunity — something transformational here… We’re going to study it and speak with the North End community and, ultimately, do something special.”

Right now, we know (via Boston Restaurant Talk) that the California-based coffee shop, Peet’s Coffee, will move into the former Goody Glover’s space. As for the Bread + Butter Cafe, we’ll have to wait and see what this “something special” replacement will be for the North End spot.
