Cambridge-based Brightcove, one of our companies to watch in 2011, is bringing the excitement of the Sundance Film Festival right to your screen. The company is the official online video provider for the Festival. Brightcove’s video technology has powered the festival each year since 2008; however, this year marks a first for the introduction of live streaming.

According to Brightcove, Sundance was looking to expand the reach of the festival and their video content to new platforms and devices. Thanks to Brightcove, it will be doing so with live streaming of all the major events and screenings at the Festival. On top of this, Brightcove will be powering exclusive on-demand content like interviews, video highlights, and roundtable discussions.

“The mission of Sundance Institute is to discover and foster independent artists and to connect those artists with audiences,” said Joseph Beyer, Director, Digital Initiatives at the Institute. “Online video continues to play an important role in helping drive awareness and interest in the Festival.”

You can check out some of Brightcove’s video technology already in action with the Sundance “Meet the Artists” series already up on Facebook here.

Brightcove’s technology provides what’s known as “multi-bitrate streaming,” which ensures a very smooth and high quality video experience for viewers. It sets itself apart by offering a range of video solutions accessible across all major screens, platforms, browsers – including mobile. Brightcove also integrates social sharing with third party services like Twitter and Facebook, allowing you to share the joy of Sundance with your friends in just a click. For Sundance, the social network integration means more opportunity to get their brand, content, and excitement in front of more eyeballs.

“Sundance Institute continues to be a tremendous collaborator with Brightcove and a great advocate for using video as a key marketing and awareness tool,” said David Mendels, Brightcove’s President and COO. “The organization has continued to evolve its online video offerings to take advantage of new innovations in the Brightcove platform and deliver the highest quality user experience possible. The introduction of live streaming video this year will be a treat for film fans around the world.”

Brightcove provides video-delivery services to some of the biggest names in online media, from the New York Times to General Motors. From embeddable players to live streaming, the company handles all sorts of video-delivery challenges and platforms, including iPhone and iPad, for customers both large and small. They recently hired a new CFO, leading Techcrunch to speculate that they’re headed for a merger or an IPO in early 2011.

The Sundance Film Festival starts tomorrow, January 20th, and runs through the 30th in Utah — and now you can enjoy it live from your home thanks to Brightcove!
