Cambridge-based Brightcove has just announced its video management technology will power Screen Media Ventures, an independent movie distribution company, new web video platform PopcornFlix.com.

PocornFlix launched in March, is the very first of its kind. The platform offers free, ad-supported full feature-length films — currently boasting just over 175 theatrically released independent movies. Screen Media Ventures has a portfolio of 1,500 titles in its library, and plans to offer 1,000 of these (often obscure) independent films in the US by the end of the year (not to mention they’re already moving internationally).

According to Mashable in a writeup earlier this month, PopcornFlix will be partnering with Roku and Boxee in the coming months for distribution; meaning, plan for their name to hang around as the Internet TV revolution continues to gain popularity.

“Popcornflix is focused on streaming movies in the highest quality digital resolution possible to ensure we are providing the optimal viewing experience for all of our visitors,” said Gary Delfiner, senior vice president of digital distribution for Screen Media Ventures. “Brightcove sets the standard for high quality in the video industry. The range of options the company offers for delivering ad-supported long-form content across multiple platforms makes this an ideal partnership both now and in the future.”

Brightcove will allow PopcornFlix to manage and deliver its videos over multiple platforms and devices (like smartphones and tablets), and integrate seamlessly with ad networks to monetize the experience and continue to deliver these indie films for free over the web.

“Popcornflix brings a unique value proposition to the world of independent film distribution, and the service is well-positioned to expand and grow its viewership in a very short time,” said David Mendels, Brightcove president and chief operating officer. “This is an exciting partnership for Brightcove and we look forward to helping Popcornflix.com scale its video operations to reach new platforms and devices.”
