As a southern-born cocktail drinker, it should come as no surprise that I’m also a fan of milk punch libations. There’s nothing like that milky-sweetness with a kick of bourbon – or another spirit – to start the day (and end it).

But I have to admit – the best I’ve had in Boston (so far) was while brunching at Ward 8. The restaurant and bar, located on the outskirts of the North End, offers the neighborhood a nice alternative to the usual Italian fare. And with their extraordinary cocktails and tasty fare, it’s quickly become a popular spot amongst Bostonians.

When I heard that the restaurant had just launched brunch (about a month ago), I knew I had to try it. On Ward 8’s brunch menu, you’ll find a variety of choices – some of the standouts include: Oysters shooters, lemon ricotta crepes, french toast casserole, an olive oil poached tuna melt, a mouthwatering breakfast burger, and flatiron steak and eggs.

But to start with, my brunch partner and I both ordered (what else) the milk punch cocktail. This cocktail comes with Landy VS Cognac, milk, vanilla and nutmeg. It’s a cup of frothy goodness and I highly recommend it (if you like sweet in the A.M.)!

I also ordered the breakfast burger, which (trust me) was as good as it looks (below). The burger came on a buttered portuguese sweet roll (basically an overgrown English Muffin) with a fried and runny egg, hollandaise sauce, cheese and bacon. And with a side of tasty fried tater tots, this fattening (and delicious) burger also served as great motivation to hit the gym later.

We also tried the flatiron steak and eggs, accompanied with plenty of delicious hollandaise sauce and home fries. Mmm… it was plenty mouthwatering as well.

Hungry yet?

Wait till you see the grand brunch finale (below). The restaurant serves up the brunch dessert, custard, with your choice of sauce and toppings. What you see below is a butterscotch and bourbon sauce drizzled throughout the custard, topped with coconut flakes. Rich and creamy – I can’t imagine a sweeter beginning to my day.

Just make sure you prepare for a post-brunch nap a la stretchy pants, of course. Happy brunching, folks!
