Bullying is a sweeping epidemic in today’s society. But with social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, it can be just as easy to harass someone as it is to start a movement against doing so.

A Wisconsin news anchor decided to stand up to a bully of her own yesterday when she revealed on the air that she had received an email with some not-so-encouraging words from a not-so-forgiving bully.

In the video below, Jennifer Livingston recites the email she received from a viewer who is critical of her appearance and calls it irresponsible for a public figure to look the way she does. Bravely, Livingston calls the emailer out with a four-minute response that belittles him and his convictions while relaying to the audience that October is National Bullying Month. She turns the hurtful message into a positive public announcement by noting,

“Those of us in the media, we get a healthy dose of critiques from our viewers throughout the year and we realize that comes with having a job in the public eye. But this email was more than that. While I tried my best to laugh off the very hurtful attack on my appearance, my colleagues could not do the same especially my husband, our 6:00 and 10:00 anchor Mike Thompson.”

Thompson subsequently posted the email on the station’s Facebook page with what Livingston calls an inspiring response.

I love this video because Livingston handles the entire situation, with poise, eloquence, and grace under fire. Even better is that she separates herself from the bully and makes note of all the children and young adults who don’t get to voice their opinions to a televised audience and need someone to stand up for them. Well, you did it Jennifer and we’re all grateful. You and everybody out there are not just another number on the scale.
