Last month we learned that the U.S. could be on the brink of a whiskey crisis. With demand for the hard stuff outpacing supply, coupled with the slow “aging process and evaporation loss,” this “shortage” could be a real problem, according to the Buffalo Trace distillery. But while some folks argue that the fears are “overblown,” others are pre-empting the whiskey draught by reaching for another alcohol – Gin.

According to CNBC.com, summertime’s popular libation is now experiencing “a less-seasonal renaissance on cocktail menus and a stronger presence on liquor store shelves, thanks to the craft distilling boom.”

Nima Ansari, spirit buyer and sales manager for New York City’s Astor Wines and Spirits, tells CNBC that gin has “… turned into a category of, there’s something for everyone.” She also explains that “there’s a massive amount of potential, and we’ve just started in the past year or so to see some really, really interesting products coming on to the market.”

I can’t lie – when I think of gin, my mind immediately associates it with something my grandparents drank back in the day. It’s a little old fashioned  – and I’m not much of a gin & tonic drinker, to be honest.

But there are still a few gin cocktails that I do like in Boston. Some of my favorites include a dirty gin martini from Lucca and the Pink Lady cocktail from Carrie Nation, among others.

Here’s to hoping that the gin revival sticks around for a while! In the comments below, let us know where your favorite gin drink can be found in the Hub.
